Horror Conventions

The codes and conventions of horror films I think are mostly the same. Sex, drugs, goasts, spirits, death is often what you expect in a horror film and that is what you pretty much get. I think at this very moment horror is going through a majour crisis as there is no originltiy left. Pretty much every horro film you have seen or will see all tie in together and there are a very little amount of films that are horror and are unique. I cant think of a film that was a horror and was differnt, however I think no one can really be blame as it is that type of a genre that does make it hard to come up with something good.

Whatever is said in horror films is also repetaive. 'who's there' is a phrases we have probabbly heard over a million times in horror film. Screaming, shouting and crying is also the same. I think all films lack originlity and we are in need of a good and differnt horror movie.
Props used I horror fils are also the same, almost evey horror film will have a knife used, if not then a axe, gun or another weapon that can kill. We also see the same typical people in horror film, a villian- which can be either supernatrual, a ghoast or spirit or normal and a hero. We also often the little children to make it extra better, I admit it does make it a slight more interesting but it is getting a bit old now.

I think the film that set the bar for all theese horror conventions and codes was Scream. this was the main big film in which we saw it all and in this we see they are all well embedded.

Some codes and conventions horror films follow are
  • Use of low key lighting
  • low angle shots
  • high age rating like 15 or 18
  • blurred sound
  • young aged characters
